In the year 540 A.D., King Chinhung came to power in the Silla Kingdom at the ripe young age of 7 years old and ruled until 576 A.D. One of his greatest contributions to Korean History is the foundation of the "Hwarang" Knights which eventually led to the unification of Korea for the first time in history under the leadership of General Yoo Shin Kim. King Chinhung called upon the services of a Buddhist Priest, Won Kwang Bopsa, who developed a moral code of conduct, which would be harmonious with the laws of nature, the "Hwarang O Kae."
As modern day Hwarang, we still practice and abide by the Hwa Rang O Kae, which is memorized and repeated at the end of every class in both Korean and English.
The Hwa Rang Do Kyo Hoon (the Nine Doctrines) were added to our principles of moral conduct by the Founder of Hwa Rang Do®, Dr. Joo Bang Lee. As Dr. Lee contemplated teaching the ancient knowledge of the Hwarang by the formation of a systemized martial art, he realized the importance of creating strong moral character within its students. Therefore he incorporated these Nine Doctrines to help the modern Hwa Rang Do® students better understand human ethics, virtues and philosophy as the foundation to self-actualizing truths.
